Barry, Keep keeping on. Folk music has a history of not just the song or the songwriter or the ups and downs of someone's career. Folk music traces American and world history - maybe a small piece that happened in a small place or a major event. You can start asking why some figure you hear about is so important and you learn more and more. I know about Pretty Boy Floyd because of Woody. I understand the (misplaced) admiration of Luigi Mangione because I learned about Pretty Boy Floyd. The learning never stops.
I'm new to you Spook and almost have the same name (SpookyOne) in an intelligence group I'm a member of. I started out writing and performing folk with my main inspiration coming from Dylan, Seeger, Peter, Paul and Mary and a few others but crossed over to country and country rock for it was during the Urban Cowboy era and country became very big especially for those like myself who needed to make a living in the bars and clubs, plus I enjoyed riding the mechanical bull. But I do still love and have a place in my heart for folk. I haven't listened to your music yet but will after closing this post. Though I have opened for a good number of hit country stars, I am sure I will learn something from you in the very near future. Reading your post had already taught me something, thank you very much. This is a superb and interesting piece! Thank you. 😊 Life has recently handed me some unavoidable tasks, and I am behind in reading your articles. Looking forward to catching up.
