Beyond the Veil Part I
Post 128
Hello Friends,
I submitted one of my new pieces to a major publication this week. I don’t want to jinx myself by sharing any details. The chances are small that the piece will be published, but they account for the two-week gap since my last post.
While I await hearing back, I would like to stray a bit from my recent thread. Allow me to start by thanking everyone who’s been reading, sharing, and/or commenting on my posts.
A MIS-FIT
I’ve never fit other people’s algorithm. If my mom were a computer person, she would probably have told me, “Fit the algorithm,” instead of constantly asking, “Why can’t you be like everyone else?” Nor do my posts nicely fit the algorithm. As a result, they don’t get seen much, and then they don’t get read very much. That’s another reason to thank those of you who do read them, especially when you share or repost them.
I hope my insights have value. They’re not necessarily better than anybody else’s, but they are different, and sometimes hearing something that doesn’t fit the algorithm can be refreshing and can stimulate creativity.
ESOTERICA
I’ve seen things in this world that don’t fit the algorithm. Things most people don’t talk about. Esoteric things that lie beyond the mundane. And I can’t fight off the compulsion to share some. I’ve hung out with other people who have seen things, too. Real things. Take “Josie” (not her real name), who, on occasion, told me the minute details of my dreams. That’s right. She told me details of my dreams.
Once, while giving a talk on dreams, I told of one set in either Italy or Hungary in 1946. In the dream, my brother and I were caught spying on what I thought was a prisoner of war camp, run by what I thought were Nazis. Josie interrupted my telling and said, “Tell them about your dog.”
That really struck me, because in the dream, lying in the leaves alongside my brother and me was, in fact, a dog – my dog. Josie claimed she knew the details of my dream because she was in it. I told her I didn’t see her, and she protested, “You never see me. You don’t listen.” Most people would think that’s pretty weird and that I should be a little creeped out. But I’d seen this stuff before, so I took it in stride.
RESPONSIBILITY
Josie apparently knew details of other people’s dreams, too. And she got indignant that people didn‘t embrace her talent. She let it throw her off balance – not because she saw things, but because she didn’t handle the gift responsibly. The community eventually dismissed her, and now she keeps to her lonely self in her small apartment in South Jersey, where she rarely speaks to others.
There are many stories to tell. And I’d love to read yours in the comment section below this article. I believe there is a very real, active, important “reality” that lies just beyond “the veil.” I believe our lives could be richer if we were more open to this realm. But there are good reasons why we only get occasional glimpses into this other worlds, and why most people dismiss what they see there. They called it “weird.” It freaks some people out.
I have observed certain demographics in our society becoming more accustomed to living among people who look different and lead different lifestyles. If we can open ourselves to that, maybe we can also open ourselves to the reality beyond the veil.
Until we do…
